Lil Nas X is an American rapper who gained unprecedented popularity after the release of the song and video “Old Town Road”.

Biography

Montero Lamar Hill was born in Atlanta, Georgia. When the boy was 6 years old, his parents divorced. For the first three years he lived with his mother and grandmother at Bankhead Courts, but then he was forced to move to his father in Ostelle (Austell). As Leal himself later admitted, initially he had no particular desire to change his place of residence, but then he regarded this as an important decision, since “a lot of shit happens” in Atlanta and could get into the wrong company.

The boy studied music from an early age – he played the trumpet. However, in high school, he quit due to fear of looking “not cool”. Hill graduated from Lithia Springs High School in 2017 and enrolled at the University of West Georgia after only one year. During this time, he worked part-time at Zaxby’s (a fast food specializing in chicken wings, etc.), as well as at Six Flags (an amusement park).

According to the new star, he began to distance himself from the “classic” life path in his teens. He posted short videos on Facebook and created a Nicki Minaj fan account on Twitter. He then created another Nicki Minaj Facts account. It has gained some popularity. However, after the media found out that Lil might be behind it, he said he didn’t run the page.

Musical career

In 2018, the guy began to experiment with music. He was a fan of Drake and some other American rappers, but he never thought that he would become a professional musician himself.

On December 2, 2018, Leal uploaded the video “Old Town Road (I Got The Horses In The Back)” to YouTube, in which he simply stuffed cuts from the popular western-style game: Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar Games.

The video and song quickly went viral. In total, “Old Town Road” got to the top position in the American country chart, but was soon removed from there due to the lack of the proper amount of country-style music elements. A scandal broke out, of course, with racial overtones, which played into the hands of a black rapper. Nas received support from the father of Miley Cyrus (Billy Ray Cyrus), a country star, who even helped him record a new version of the newly minted hit.

In mid-April 2019, it became known that the song “Old Town Road” broke the record for the number of plays via the Internet (streams): 143 million in a week. Thus, the new hit surpassed Drake’s “In My Feelings”, which received 116.2 million streams in a seven-day period in July 2018.

On May 17, the official video with the new version of the song was released. As of early June 2018, it has almost 100 million views.

What awaits the young talent in the future? There is an opinion that the rapper was just lucky, his song shot due to a number of factors and such success will not happen again in the future. While Miley Cyrus’ father is giving Leal advice on how not to waste money (buying land), the artist looks to the future with optimism.

In June 2019, Nas’s first album is due out and, contrary to rumors, it should not have country elements. However, fans are still waiting for the remix of “Old Town Road”.
