Bo Derek is the brightest of the Hollywood stars of the 80s, it is she who is personally responsible for insomnia, which became a diagnosis for most of the men on the planet, appearing in the form of a dream woman who runs along the beach shore into the arms of her beloved in the film “10”.
Early years
The name of the actress is Mary Kathleen Collins, she was born on November 20, 1956 in California in the family of the owner of the boat station Paul Collins and his wife, hairdresser Ann Margaret. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Paul and Ann Margaret divorced, and stuntman Bobby Bass became the girl’s stepfather.
After Mary graduated from elementary school, her parents sent the girl to a private boarding house in Harbor City, from which she escaped when she was barely 15. A month later, Ann Margaret and Bobby found her on the beach, where Mary was spending time with friends, surfing and sunbathing. Her parents persuaded her to return to school, and Mary agreed, especially since she had only one year left to study.
Career
The surrounding people have always admired the gentle beauty of the girl, her fair skin and the ashy shade of luxurious hair. In her youth, Mary dreamed of a catwalk, but with a height of 160 centimeters, she could only become a fashion model, which she did after graduating from school. At the age of 16, the beauty starred in videos advertising clothes and skin and hair care products, and at the age of 17, the agent brought her to the film studio, where the fateful acquaintance of the young actress and John Derek took place. After marrying a famous actor, Mary became Bo, and her naturally blond hair brightened another two tones.
The first appearance of this spectacular fragile blonde on the screen is the 1977 film “Death Among the Icebergs”, in which Charlotte Rampling played the zoologist, and Richard Harris played the Irish captain who provoked the shark attack. A small role was given to the young actress, and every viewer’s heart sank at the moment when the huge shark bit off Annie’s beautiful leg.
Two years later, the erotic comedy 10 was released, in which Bo played the role of a dream woman rushing towards the character of an aging Dudley Moore. It was in this tape that Bo appeared in a swimsuit and with her hair braided into dreadlocks, overnight becoming a sex symbol of the 80s era.
Twenty years later, the price of the March 1980 issue of Playboy, on the cover of which Bo smiles in a bikini the color of her skin, will reach 13 thousand dollars, becoming only more expensive every year.
Films
The 1981 adventure film Tarzan the Ape-Man, in which the jewel-like Bo plays the virgin Jane, could well have been classified as a B-production due to overly explicit scenes of intimacy with Tarzan performed by Miles O’Keeffey. The bet made by John Derek, who acted as director and producer, on the beauty of his wife’s body was hostilely received by both viewers and critics. In addition to The Golden Raspberry, the picture also became the occasion for a lawsuit, which was insisted on by the heirs of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who considered that erotic inclusions defame the good name of the writer.
The 1984 film “Bolero” again brought Bo the “Golden Raspberry”, in the film the actress again played a virgin, ready to travel around half the earth’s macaw in search of a single man.
In the film “Ghosts Don’t Do It”, Bo’s partner was Anthony Quinn, but even his presence did not save the film, which again earned the title of the worst picture of 1989 and added to the collection of “Golden Raspberries” of the beautiful Bo.
The 1992 tape “Hot Chocolate”, unlike the previous ones, was not replete with erotic scenes, and even earned the approval of some film critics. Bo played the romantic role of a chocolate factory owner trying to mend her relationship with the manager.
From 1993 to 2000, the filmography of the actress was replenished with the films “Priestess of Passion”, “Heart, Heart”, “Convergence”, but none of them brought Bo recognition of her acting talent.
With the advent of the new century, the canons of beauty have changed, time required new heroines, and Bo had to give in to the stars of the new generation, however, forever remaining a symbol of a bygone era. Oddly enough, in the films of the early 2000s, the actress was able to show a more mature game, which may have been due to the onset of physiological maturity. Having abandoned the role of sexy cats, Bo showed her abilities as a comedian, playing in such comedy films as “Naughty Parents”, “Wanted in Malibu”, “Master of Disguise” and others.
In the period 2007 – 2016, Derek appeared in films and TV serials, mainly in episodic roles. The actress focused on her personal life, social and political activities and charitable actions in defense of animals.
Personal life
In 1973, the sixteen-year-old star met John Derek, their rapidly starting romance nearly cost the actor his freedom. Bo and John were forced to wait until Bo came of age in Europe, and after returning to the States they got married. John was thirty years older than Bo, their marriage lasted until 1998, before John’s death from heart failure.
The actress was very upset by the loss of a loved one, from whom she was never able to give birth to children. In her youth, she dreamed of children, but John was against it, believing that pregnancy would have a bad effect on her ideal appearance. Left a widow at 42, Bo learned to live again, after spending a year in seclusion, she gradually began to go out again and, after a six-year break, to act in films, though she had to forget about her former glory.
In 2003, Bo took part in the bachelor entertainment “blind date”, and the person who came on a date with her was John Corbett. The second fateful meeting, held in a restaurant in Los Angeles, gave Bo family happiness. After a year of romantic relationship, Beau and John Corbett settled on a ranch in California, where they live in seclusion, allowing only close friends and relatives into their world.
