“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is, according to many film critics, the film in which we have witnessed the strongest performance of the famous American-Canadian actor Jim Carrey. In all his other roles, we see a rather talented comedian who knows how to make faces well and get (according to the plots of films) into stupid situations. But Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is something else. Here we see a mature dramatic actor who skillfully reincarnated from a comedic jester into a person who shows the whole gamut of feelings and experiences. After watching this film, we understand that Jim Carrey is indeed a very talented and multi-genre actor. The script of the film, coupled with the successful selection of actors, gives a powerful message that makes you think about the meaning of the picture.

The main character, Joel, gives the impression of a self-contained person, to some extent even a sociophobe. He does not make contact too easily, and he will be able to open up only to the person whom he fully trusts. But even in this case, Joel will not be too talkative, because he believes that almost nothing interesting happens in his life. In order for the hero Carrie to enter into conflict, it is necessary to get him out of the “shell”. In this case, he may say too much, turning the usual small quarrel into a serious scandal.

This is what leads to a conflict with Clem – his girlfriend, who is his extreme antipode. But, as they say, opposites attract, the couple lives together for a long time and, in many ways, such a relationship suits them. The starting point of the gap is, as follows from the plot of the picture, a quarrel over children. Clem, like any normal woman, wants a child, and Joel expresses doubts that she will be a good mother. After that, Clem appears home well after midnight, drunk. Joel makes a well-founded claim, and Clem erases him from his memory at a specialized company.

The protagonist, having learned about this, also takes such an extreme step. The plot of the picture unfolds in the memory of Joel, in the process of erasing memories of Clementine. But the main character, during the procedure, relives all the memories associated with his ex-girlfriend. These memories fade one by one. At a certain stage, Joel realizes that the memories of Clementine are very dear to him, as well as his relationship with her. From this moment, the struggle begins to hide the memories of Clem, not to forget her. This struggle takes the most desperate forms, the main character literally bites into his memories, trying to protect them. Against this background, other events take place, passing storylines develop.

The meaning of the film begins to emerge quite clearly – you need to appreciate your memories, because they contain a person’s life. Before you try to remove something from your soul, you must first realize and rethink everything that happened, and only then take any action. Otherwise, you can lose most of yourself, as happens with the main character.

The meaning of the ending

Joel’s struggle ends in defeat, all his memories are erased, he no longer remembers Clem, just like she remembers him. But we see that they are back together, riding in the same car again to get her toothbrush (Clem moves in with Joel again). The main character finds a package at home, which contains all the information about the past experience (this was taken care of by an employee of the company, who also previously erased her memories). But Joel finds the same package. Now they are completely open to each other, which does not prevent them from being together again.

We believe that the meaning of the ending of this film is that fate decides for us what will happen. And even in the case when the memories are erased, if people are predestined to be together, they will love each other again, even after the memory of the past is reset.
